about

‘Pros, Cons & Prawns’: a tried and tested method of evaluating life’s many decisions AND the title of the newest release from Pink Goldfish! Pedlars of the freshest Western Australian musings on life, as delivered in the form of alternative punk music, these 11 tracks showcase a band in their finest form yet, finding their niche in today’s ever warming and more extreme musical landscape.

Having refined their brand of crunchy, juicy, lip-smacking codswallop over an album and two previous EPs, including January’s ‘Ego Boost’, the latest offering sees the three hardy soundwave seafarers looking more introspectively. Contemplating their health, future and the unknown, the band steer into darker and deeper waters, both lyrically and musically. As ever though, the songs are served with a heavy helping of riffs, some well-seasoned melodies and a fine coating of wit, making ‘Pros, Cons & Prawns’ quite the delectable catch.

“All these needles puncture my skin” quips the vocalist in the opening seconds of the album, a visceral introduction to the onslaught of one-two punch ‘Blood’ and ‘Hypochondriac’. What appears as a slight let-up in directness for ‘Out In The Night’ is actually a warning of the dangers that await, before ‘Did You Just Say What I Think You Said?’ sends you down the rabbit hole of absurdity, residing snugly with a community of Pink Goldfish songs that make you ask that very question.

‘Something Real’ provides a change in pace amidst a yearning for the tangible, while ‘Lump In My Throat’ leads you into a whirlpool of further indecision. ‘Navigate’ finds you well and truly lost, wondering if you’re ready for directions out, and the angst at your situation is fully released on ‘Moving On’ and ‘Second Degree Burns’. Just as you prepare to face things head on, ‘Mutilator’ appears and the waves of ‘Drown’ wash over you, leaving you to reflect on your experiences, both positive and negative.

Pros: 45 minutes of Pink Goldfish at their best; can be endlessly replayed for non-stop enjoyment
Cons: Albums are finite works of art that conclude; lives are finite periods of time that conclude
Prawns: A marine crustacean that resembles a large shrimp, many varieties of which are edible (Oxford Languages)
